Our martial art classes for adult students

Aikido is a unique martial art that teaches effective self-defence as well as being a dynamic way to improve your fitness.
So what are our classes like?
All our classes are structured so that complete beginners are always taught in a friendly, fun environment that allows them to develop at their own pace. In an average class you will be taught a set of basic moves, structured techniques and some self-defence applications. Aikido techniques involve throws and locks and we always teach you how to breakfall safely.
All our classes start off with a set of warm-up exercises and an aerobic workout. Most of our classes are for two hours with a short break after the first hour. Nearly all Aikido training is done with a partner whose job it is to help you learn. Aikido has no competitions and is ideally suited to any body size.
At the Koushinkan Aikido Oxford we also include some bokken (wooden sword) and jo (wooden staff) exercises in our teaching. These exercises are designed to help you learn timing and distance – some of the basic principles of Aikido – and are great fun to learn.
We run martial arts classes at a number of different venues around Oxford and you are welcome to attend as many classes as you wish.
For the short time I have been attending classes at Koushinkan Aikido Oxford I have had a lot of fun, met a lot of great and friendly people, realized you cannot become a decent martial artist without working hard for it and gained a healthy respect for Aikido. Overall an awesome club with great members
So what should you wear?

In Aikido we wear a white training suit called a ‘Gi’. For your first few lessons you can wear whatever is comfortable for you – most people wear a t-shirt and track suit bottoms. Please make sure that you remove anything sharp from your pockets and that you remove any rings, jewellery or watches before training. If you would like to purchase a Gi we can arrange that for you.
Can I come along and just watch?
Of course, you are very welcome to come along to watch any of our martial art classes in Oxford.
Do I need to be physically fit before I join?
No, you don’t need to be fit or have done any exercise before to start Aikido. If you have any concerns about your fitness please feel free to discuss it with an instructor.
I have an injury or a medical condition that means I may not be able to do everything required in a class. Can I still do Aikido?
Yes of course but please discuss your physical needs with an instructor before joining a class. We have existing students with differing physical needs that train very successfully. We will vary your training to suit your needs.
Do you observe any particular rules or etiquette in Aikido?
Yes. Aikido is a Japanese martial art and during the class we observe a structured etiquette – bowing at the start and finish of a class, bowing to your partner and the instructor. We also have a Code of Practice which you must observe if you train with us.
How many times a week do I need to train?
It’s up to you. At present we run two adult classes a week and you may attend any of these. Obviously the more you train the more you will learn. We recommend training twice a week but if you can only make one class then that is also fine. The important thing is to train with whole-hearted commitment when you do train.
How much do the lessons cost?
We charge a fee of £7.00 per class which we ask that you pay monthly, once you are a full club member. We ask that you make a decision as to how many lessons a week you can commit to and pay accordingly.
Do I need insurance to practice?
Yes. For your safety and that of your fellow students, you can only practice if you have martial arts insurance. This is required on your fourth lesson and the fee also includes membership to our association. Please contact Sensei Richard for the latest insurance/membership prices.
I have only recently joined the club but I have been made to feel very welcome. The instructors make time for everyone, irrespective of standard, and the more experienced members are always prepared to help and support
